More than 25,000 people are expected to show up to cover the 29 km course on the Left Bank by bike, skateboard, trainers, rollerblades, horseback or soapbox cart. A congenial and safe day out in the country.
Without chronometers or rules, the only constraint being to show up and follow the direction of the course, the SlowUp draws more participants every year. What’s the attraction? Probably the relaxed atmosphere, since one can participate at any age and start out at any point along the course, for a few hundred meters, 10 km, or more. The means of locomotion doesn’t matter, so long as it is not motorized. A wonderful way to discover our beautiful countryside with the whole family or with friends, and strike up new acquaintances.
An uphill grind
A start is planned at 10am for the Village SlowUp on Quai Gustave-Ador, with a return around 4pm. The only difficulty is the 2 km uphill section at Cologny, which requires some good leg muscles. The course wends its way through the picturesque and welcoming villages with their farmhouses and manors.
Refreshments will be provided: in Cologny a welcome break with DJ La Teuf at Pré-Byron, and some substantial refuelling above Choulet, at the Rivollet Farm. On the menu: appetizers such as rillettes de lapin (a sort of potted hare) and four kinds of open-faced sandwiches, cold and hot platters, fruit tarts and chocolate squares. The Gitans and Gitanes of Gy will welcome you under the lime trees with locally made apple juice, Genevan wines and tasty snacks. Then it will be back onto the bike or the rollerblades to make it to the finish – or to the next pit stop. There are “repair shops” along the way in case of a flat tire. Just leave your car or motorcycle at home!
Top security
All roads and paths will be well-marked and off-limits to motor vehicles.
Some 130 civil defence workers will be on hand to supervise your safety. It is strongly recommended that cyclists wear a helmet with reflective strips and that skateboarders and rollerbladers wear kneepads, elbow pads and wrist guards. First aiders will be standing by in case of accident. The ProCap Association will provide assistance to disabled participants and charging terminals for electric wheelchairs will be set up along the course.
